dumbarton bridge closure, a lot going on. i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. president obama staying overnight in san jose where he will be attending a business roundtable this morning asian american pacific islander business round table collecting cash for his reelection campaign. after touching down last night he went to the home of doug goldman where he took in more than $38,000 per guest. after that a bigger event at the fox theater in redwood city. he spoke to more than 1,000 who paid up to $7500 to see and hear him speak about the issues in his campaign. >> the president: i want women to control their own health care choices, just like i want my daughters to have the same opportunities as my son, we are not rolling back the clock. >> there were protesters

outside. they say people should not have to pay so much to get to the president's ear and that he should do more to help seniors and the middle class. driver in redwood city in custody on a decision ui charge after causing scary moments before the president got to the fox theater. there was a chase that resulted in the man's car crashing after he tried to evade police by going the wrong way on el camino real. the street was already shutdown as people were lining up to get a glimpse of the motorcade. the car went off the road and traveled south on the northbound lanes. officers with guns drawn arrested the suspect after the crash. suspect in the disappearance and murder of sierra lamar is scheduled to face a judge later today. amy hollyfield is live outside the santa clara county jail with a preview of today's developments. >> reporter: now the long

court process gets under way this will be the first of likely many. it will be rough on two families. antolin garcia-torres' relatives are very distraught over his arrest. they do not believe he could have committed this crime. the family of sierra does believe police have the right man. and her family is asking that he give up information to help end the search for her. she has been missing since march 16th. police believe she was murdered even though they haven't found her body. volunteers gathered yesterday to look for her. they say they are going to keep looking. >> me, as a parent i wouldn't give up until either her body is found either alive or dead. i'm hoping she is alive. >> reporter: police found sierra's dna in garcia-torres' car and they also found his dna on her clothing. they say the two did not know each other this was a stranger

abduction. he is in the santa clara county jail. his father is also here. he is booked on suspicion of sexual abuse. today his son will be charged with murder and kidnapping. amy hollyfield abc7 news. 5:04. former secretary of state colin powell this morning has come out in favor of same-sex marriage. he was chairman of the joint chiefs of staff in the 90s. that's when the don't ask don't tell policy was implemented. he said that was a compromise at the time and that attitudes and circumstances have changed. powell does not necessarily believe the issue should be left up to the states. community groups in oakland are banding together to make streets safer by removing guns. fundraiser will be held tonight. all the money raised will be used to buy gift cards which will be exchanged in a gun

buy-back. 110 people were killed in oakland last year, including three children under six. the wife of san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi is speaking out for the first time to the abc7 news i-team. reporter dan noyes traveled to venezuela this past weekend to speak with her who is escaping the scandal with the support of her family. >> maybe i will get divorced with ross. but i'm very close with him in this fight. this is about justice. >> coming up at 6:00 you will hear more of dan's interview with lopez as well as ross mirkarimi's response to some of what his wife is saying. important commuter news for the memorial day weekend. dumbarton bridge will be closed late friday night

through early tuesday morning. seismic retrofit project is the reason. 60,000 vehicles use the bridge daily, all that traffic will have to go somewhere else. caltrans officials suggest commuters allow extra time for travel on other routes such as san mateo-hayward bridge. breaking news out of new york city. a missing boy who vanished more than 30 years ago. >> reporter: the associated press has reached out to the boy's parents. they have yet to make public comments. their son etan patz was 6-years-old when he disappeared in 1979. this morning 33 years later the new york police commissioner says a person in custody has implicated himself in the death of the boy. that man is a new jersey man interviewed by detectives and detectives picked him up at

westbound 580 still have a problem with the brushfire emergency crews blocking right lane slowing as drivers want to take a look at what is happening. hopefully they will clear it away. incidents that you need to be aware over the long weekend. in san francisco first street closed this weekend mission street and howard beginning friday tomorrow at 8:00 due to the roadwork there by the new terminal. we have the incident with muni major shutdown for the n judah line tomorrow night and the j church line muni is saying take a bike or walk probably your best bet. once again a lot of events including the golden gate bridge celebration. yankees in town with the a's. giants' game monday bart will have sunday service on monday and it will be adding extra trains for all the events around the bay area this weekend.

up to his visit. terry mcsweeney is live at the fairmont where the president overnighted. this has been a heck of a lucrative visit to the bay area. >> reporter: 16 hours but very lucrative four million dollars going to cap it off with breakfast with some asian-americans here at the fairmont hotel. take a look at where this 16 hour deal started yesterday about 6:30 in the evening the president coming in on air force one. strictly a fundraising event out here. a few hours after landing the president was at the fox theater in redwood city. 1100 people there paying between $250 and $7500. some paid $12,500 to get a picture with the president. to hear him say his likely opponent in november reut it would put the -- mitt romney would put the country on the

president obama is not the only big named politician in town raising money. house speaker boehner picked up campaign cash. the republican from ohio attended a fundraiser in woodside. take s ranged from $1,000 to $35,000. a group of protesters demonstrated outside their attention was focused on congressman lundgren who co-hosted the event. protesters expected to gather outside the gap headquarters this morning in san francisco where republican house budget committee chairman paul ryan was scheduled to attend. it looks like he won't be there. the chronicle reports it looks like the expected protest has prompted a change to a secret location for the wisconsin congressman's fundraising breakfast. protest still plan to show up -- [ unintelligible ] suspect in the murder of 15-year-old sierra lamar is scheduled to make his first court appearance today.

21-year-old antolin garcia-torres will be arraigned today. he was arrested monday night and is charged with kidnapping and murder. authorities don't have a murder weapon. garcia-torres is linked to lamar through dna found on clothes in sierra's purse. terry mcsweeney will have a live report in san jose in about a half hour. firefighters worked through night to put out a fire onboard a nuclear attack submarine dock in new england. full investigation underway. the fire broke out aboard the uss miami which was docked at the shipyard in maine. firefighters battled that blaze well into the night. the heat created kept smoke going fire was intense and specialized crews and equipment from as far away as boston had to be brought in. cause of that fire is unknown and miami was docked for maintenance and upgrade work the damage that was done is being called major.

5:32. former arizona congresswoman who survived an assassination attempt made a rare public appearance. gabby giffords was in beverly hills last night with her husband astronaut mark kelly the simon wiesenthal center award them a medal of valor. she left congress to continue her recovery after being shot in the head. six people decide. the wiesenthal center gave out medals of valor to holocaust survive eastern tuskegee airmen. -- fire burned 10 ayers curse along high 128 -- -- gusty winds a problem in southern california and it contributed to major damage in the antelope valley.

this morning san francisco place arrested a man for a carjacking and robbery after a chase across the bay bridge the suspect's car a white ford van was found on west grand near burma road. officers arrested one they are still looking for one more. this morning there are growing signs of uncertainty at hewlett-packard after hp announced the largest round of lay-offs in its 73 year history. the computer company is cutting 27,000 jobs or 8% of its worldwide workforce a sign it can no longer compete with the popularity of smartphones tablets and other mobile devices it could save 3 1/2 billion dollars annually. more people say governor brown is doing a bad job than saying he's doing a good job.

the poll shows 43% disapprove of the job governor brown is doing. 42% approve. last month his approval rating was 47%. the dip comes off his announcement last week that the state deficit has grown by 60%. the poll shows 56% of voters support his november ballot initiative to raise taxes. 38% are opposed. spokesperson for tully's coffee says state imposed furloughs are partly to blame foreclosing its downtown oakland cafe. with no notice the coffee shop closed may 17 saying the cafe was not meeting the minimum financial requirements to stay open. tully as -- tully's blamed increased competition and furloughs. facebook is considering switching its listing from the nasdaq exchange after the ipo
